Celebrating 168 Years of Kurnool: Intellectuals Gathering at Osmania College Honors Regional History and Legacy
Kurnool District's 168th Formation Day Celebrated at Osmania College; Gandhian Leader Sri Chandrashekhar Kalkura Honored
KURNOOL: The historic campus of Osmania College became the focal point of regional pride today as the Kurnool District Intellectuals Consortium organized grand celebrations to mark the 168th Kurnool District Formation Day. The event was held under the able presidency of Dr. Sameeuddin Muzammil, drawing prominent academicians, historians, and students alike.
Addressing the gathering, the speakers shed light on the glorious history, vibrant culture, and distinct identity of Kurnool district. They emphasized the heavy sacrifices and invaluable contributions made by the region during the Indian independence movement, which earned Kurnool a prominent position on the national map.
A Legacy of Rebellion and Intellectual Brilliance
Speaking on the occasion, the Founder and President of the Consortium, Prof. S Mansoor Rahman, highlighted that Kurnool was a cradle of revolution long before the First War of Independence in 1857. He recalled three monumental local rebellions—spearheaded by the fighters of Ternakal village, the Kurnool Sansthanam, and the Palegars of 66 villages—which stood as a testament to the fierce grit of the land.
"When the first-ever Padma Awards were introduced in India in 1954, it was a moment of immense pride that three visionaries from Kurnool district were conferred with the honor simultaneously—Educationist Acharya Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, Politician Sri Ramaswami Mudaliar, and Industrialist Sri Machani Somappa. At a time when entire states couldn't secure a single award, Kurnool clinched three," Prof. Rahman remarked.
"The Pride of Kurnool" Award Bestowed
As a major highlight of the formation day celebrations, noted Gandhian follower and eminent litterateur, Sri Chandrashekhar Kalkura, was honored with the prestigious "The Pride of Kurnool" award.
Osmania College Correspondent, Smt. Azra Javed, felicitated him with a memento and a certificate of appreciation. She highly lauded his lifelong dedication to society and expressed pride in him being an illustrious alumnus of Osmania College.
In his acceptance speech, an emotional Sri Chandrashekhar Kalkura shared his nostalgic student-day memories at the college, recalling the historic visits of national stalwarts like Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr. Raj राजेंद्र Prasad, Dr. Zakir Husain, as well as literary icons like Viswanatha Satyanarayana and Sri Sri.
A Role Model for Regional Progress
Dr. Akbar Banu, Dean of Cluster University, attended the event as a guest and noted that Kurnool’s multi-sectoral advancement serves as a guiding light for other regions. She added that the Rayalaseema region has consistently produced top-tier intellectuals who have served the nation with distinction.
The event was coordinated seamlessly by Sri Masood Ahmed (Head of the History Department) and Sri Sheikh Ghouse (Head of the Political Science Department). Key speeches were also delivered by prominent figures including Sri Muduchukota Chandrashekhar, Dr. Ramanaiah, Dr. Saleem Basha, J.S.R.K. Sharma, Nandyala Rahmathullah, Paparao, and Ramudu.
The memorable event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Ghulam Hussain, followed by the rendition of the National Anthem by the faculty and students in attendance.
